5th Annual Ketáb Dorm Supply Drive
Each year in the month of May, we conduct Ketáb's Annual Dorm Supply Drive to get our students the materials they need to embark on their first year of college. Keep reading to see how this year's drive went.
Our 2024 annual dorm supply drive worked in collaboration with the University of Miami’s Planet Kreyol and Missionaries of Charity to distribute items to both students in Miami and people in Haiti. Through this initiative:
-
We provided fifteen students with a full set of basic dorm supply essentials such as mini-fridges, microwaves, mattress pads, mirrors, Chromebook laptops, and bed risers. In addition, we collected and distributed a wide range of additional materials, such as fans, bikes, lamps, and bed sheets, catering to various needs.
-
We aided Missionaries of Charity with their annual supply drive for people impacted by extreme poverty in Haiti. Missionaries of Charity collected toiletries, cleaning supplies, bed sheets, and nonperishable food items.
-
Our collections went far beyond predicted levels this year, and we collected an additional six minifridges and four additional microwaves, which were donated to the local Salvation Army in Little Haiti, further supporting our local community in Miami.
Our Students
Dorm supplies are often an expense overlooked by university financial aid and scholarship programs. Having the proper dorm supplies is an essential aspect of setting our students up for success. Supporting families with dorm supplies eases the transition to college and reduces the cost burden that families experience at the beginning of the year. Please see our pie charts below to get a better picture of the students that Ketab supported this year.
This year, our students came from everywhere. From Miami Lakes to Carol City and even Homestead, we reached students from all over.
More than half of the students were served were first generation college students, which means they are the first in their family's history to go to college!
Did you know? If one parent or even a grand parent attended college, whether or not they finished, the student is no longer considered a first generation student.
Free or reduce lunch is an indicator of family income. Families with incomes that are 130% - 180% below the federal poverty line qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Students are going far and wide to achieve their dreams. We are just a stepping stone for them to keep going up. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
